Boat Lettering & Number Decal FAQ's

  • What is vinyl boat lettering?

Vinyl boat lettering is a vinyl sticker that is made to apply to boats. The desired design is made on a computer and then sent to a plotter where the design is cut out and prepared for placement. This can be done with lettering, numbers, logos, and almost any other boat graphics you may desire. You can even have boat lettering decals made from digital images that you can use to wrap your boat. Once your vinyl boat lettering is prepared you simply peel and paste the decal to your desired surface so you no longer have to paint by hand lettered. Boat lettering includes registration letters and numbers (made to your state specifications,) boat name decals, boat hail port lettering, and boat vinyl graphics applied to your vessel.

  • How is vinyl boat lettering made?
    vinyl boat lettering hull

Whatever design you choose, whether it be boat letters and numbers, or boat lettering and graphics, the designs are made via a computer. After this, they are sent to a plotter that uses a very sharp blade to cut the vinyl into your desired design. Pigmented vinyl is the type of vinyl used by Alphabet Signs and has a high-tack adhesive which is great when used on boats. This marine grade vinyl is pigmented throughout the material so that the whole product is the desired color instead of just its surface. When you receive them, you will notice that wax paper and pre-mask have been placed to protect and hold the design into place during this process. This makes it easier to apply more than one letter or design at a time. Our no-fade vinyl boat decals come with a 10-year salt and freshwater guarantee.

  • What size do boat numbers have to be?

The boat registration numbers and letters must be 3 inch tall, it should be a color that stands out from the color of your boat, and must use a block style font. Alphabet Signs offers the most popular block style fonts for registration numbers so you have a choice with boat lettering fonts, but don't use the domed, script, or casual fonts as they are not state compliant. There are typically two letters followed by numbers and a suffix of two or three letters and the letters should be separated by a space or dash. To find the specific requirements for your state, go to boat registration numbers by state.

  • Where are the boat registration numbers placed?

Applying boat registration numbers will vary by state but in general boat registration numbers must be affixed to the forward half of each side of the vessel and be clearly visible. Boat registration numbers are usually located on the forward hull area of your boat where it is easily visible. This is next to the DNR tag. There must be a full space between the letters and numbers.

  • How do you remove old boat lettering?

The American Boating Association gives you some great pointers for removing old lettering from your boat. It is recommended to use a scraping and soapy water method because it is typically safe for a variety of surfaces. First, get a scratch-free plastic scraper. You should be able to get this at your local paint store. You will also need a solution consisting of 1 cup of soap and 5-10 drops of dish liquid. Palmolive is the brand they used. The solution works as a lubricant to protect from scratching your boat and also prevents the adhesive from rebonding.

    1. Spray the decal with soapy water.
    2. Position the scraper along the edges of the decal.
    3. It should be as close to flat against the surface as you can get it.
    4. Start lifting the edges of the decal to remove it.
    5. Keep it saturated with soapy water by spraying it often.
    6. Once removed, you'll use a solvent to remove any remaining adhesive.

Ask your paint store to give you a recommendation on what solvent would work for your specific boat surface. Contrary to some beliefs, do not try to use gasoline for this as it is highly flammable and could cause a fire.

  • What is the best vinyl for boat decals?

We only recommend no-fade premium vinyl with a high tack adhesive. Unlike other boat lettering vendors, our die cut vinyl is pigmented throughout the material and not just on the surface – which is ideal for boat lettering that is exposed to the elements. Our easy to apply lettering comes with a 10-year salt and freshwater guarantee.

  • Do vinyl boat letters come separated or linked together?

The vinyl boat letters are produced as individually cut letters that are pre spaced on a single wax liner, and you can apply the letters one line at a time or all at once.

  • How is vinyl lettering applied?
    vinyl boat side lettering

Boat registration numbers and letter kits come pre-spaced as a one-piece decal that comes in a corrugated box to prevent wrinkles. With that said, directions come in the box with your decal.

Your first step to applying your vinyl boat lettering and numbers would be to clean the surface. You can use soap and water for this or you can use an alcohol-based cleaner that will help rid your surface of anything that might prevent good adhesion.

It is also ideal to apply your custom vinyl when it is not too hot or cold. A temperature between 45 degrees and 90 degrees works great for application.

Then, you can place the decal on the area that you want it to go and secure it with a piece of masking tape at the top to hold it in place.

You will want to flip up the decal so that the sticky part is facing away from the intended surface. Then you will carefully peel away the wax liner exposing the adhesive vinyl.

Your kit also comes with a squeegee to help you achieve a bubble-free application process. This is where you would carefully flip the decal back and use the squeegee to press the vinyl securely to the surface. You will want to start from top to bottom following a pattern almost like a windshield.

Be careful to watch for bubbles while you complete this step.

Once complete, you can remove the top layer of paper and masking tape. Your DIY application will look professionally applied. You can use this application process for any boat lettering and graphic.

HOW TO APPLY BOAT DECALS:
SO SIMPLE THEY'D THOUGHT A PRO DID IT!

When boat owners purchase vinyl decals, many are left wondering how to properly apply the custom decal to a chosen surface. The process begins with preparing the area.

  • 01
    cleaning surface

    Clean the surface

The process begins by preparing the surface. It is essential to clean all application surfaces thoroughly using an alcohol-based cleaner. This step ensures that any harmful materials are removed from the surface. Furthermore, before starting the application process, it is important to ensure that the room temperature falls between 45° and 90° Fahrenheit. The target site for your lettering should not be excessively humid, as this can adversely affect the application.

    Tape Your Decal

Once your surface is properly prepared, you can proceed by applying a strip of masking tape on the top of your custom vinyl graphic. The pre-spaced vinyl lettering, which comes with pre-masked transfer tape, can be easily applied all at once. The transfer tape, also known as premask, ensures that the vinyl lettering stays in place during the application process.

However, please be aware that the decal will not adhere to textured, perforated, or corrugated surfaces.
